In the distant future (today? 10 years? 50 years?) people travel through the stars and meet aliens from other worlds. The creatures seem to have been evolved on a different branch of life-tree from us, and all they can do is use their brains to understand the complexities of human existence. This can often be a challenge for them. Because no one knows what aliens are like, we invent an abstraction called 'psychedelic', and design an IQ test that only testes those who have experience with it. The results seem quite believable. We then find another species (these might be spacefaring animals) that does not take drugs, and use the results of our tests to establish that they are intellectually limited to a different degree. Meanwhile, we have discovered the aliens, and have several generations of children in common, and we take their kids to our stupid tests. The kids can take the test both with and without the experience of psychedelics, and their scores are quite low. This seems to confirm our conclusion that the aliens are limited to their own branch of life-tree. So we build rockets to fly up to their planet and let them go on some bigger adventure. OK, enough of that, I'm just going for some crackpot fun. This is the long way round to the point, the part that people often tend to miss when people talk about this, or keep missing even when it's made clear. If your goal is to break out of your own branch of life-tree, why not look to the stars? If your goal is to find new life and new life-forms, why don't you go look for them? If you are going to go to other planets to visit other life-forms, why don't you try to keep an open mind, even if you find that some of them are unfriendly? If you are going to come up with a life-form and civilisation, why not try to do it in a way that can apply to other life-forms? If you want to get off the planet and move into space, why don't you try to do it in a way that
